Egyptian Food Bank

The Egyptian Food Bank (EFB) is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to fighting hunger and reducing poverty in Egypt, co-founded in 2006 by businessman Moez El Shohdi. EFB both distributes food aid and works to address the root causes of hunger, such as poverty and high unemployment. Its focus areas including the repurposing of excess food from hotels and restaurants as food relief; advocacy around reducing food waste; skills training and jobs matching for beneficiaries to reduce their dependency on food aid; capacity building for partner NGOs; and volunteer programmes. Since launch, the EFB model has been recreated in more than 30 countries worldwide, via its sister organisation, the Food Bank Regional Network.

Programmes

  • Awareness programmes
A key pillar of EFB's model is raising awareness of food waste, both among the general public, and the hospitality sector. The bank also collects and repurposes untouched food from hotels and restaurants to be redistributed as food relief.
  • Development programmes
EFB's flagship programme in this space is the Villages Development Project, which uses funding to promote social and economic empowerment within villages. Funding is used in support of local infrastructure building, to support startups and small businesses, and to fund literacy classes and vocational training for residents. The food bank also operates a school feeding programme.
  • Food aid
Food aid is delivered to needy families in partnership with a network of registered nonprofits in Egypt. Distribution is expanded during Ramadan and Eid.
  • Volunteering programmes
The food bank oversees a range of individual and corporate volunteering programmes in support of its operations and distribution model.
